Traumatic brain injury can happen when a sudden, violent blow or jolt to the head results in damage to the brain. In the United States and elsewhere, it is a major cause of disability and death. As the brain collides with the inside of the skull, there may be bruising of the brain, tearing of nerve fibers and bleeding. If the skull fractures, a broken piece of skull may penetrate the brain tissue.

The Mayo clinic says traumatic brain injury is the result when an external mechanical force causes dysfunction or abnormality in the brain. It’s typically caused by a blow to the head or body that’s violent or punishing enough to lead to a brain injury in Orlando. The severity of the injury depends on a number of factors. Mild brain injuries are still dangerous, and can affect brain cells and result in a momentary dysfunction, which is why some victims go unconscious or wake up in an altered mental state. Severe injuries, though, can lead to amnesia, prolonged consciousness and in some cases, physical and mental impairment or disability for life.

Common Causes of a Brain Injury

There are four common causes. These include:

1. Car accidents. Car collisions are strong, and your head could hit the windshield or window upon impact, resulting in harm to your brain.
2. Slip and fall accidents. When you slip and fall down the stairs or lose your footing, you could hit your head and wake up with a brain injury.
3. Medical malpractice. Brain injuries can happen when doctors or members of medical staff are negligent. From surgical errors and birth injuries to shoddy care and hospital abuse, there are plenty of ways medical malpractice can lead to devastating brain injuries.
4. Work-related accidents. If you work at a construction site, you’re often exposed to greater risk of head injuries.
