We tend to think of the windy city as a big metropolitan conurbation (which, in fact it is) rather than rural countryside dotted with farms containing many farmyard animals and birds that will, from time to time, be in need of veterinarian treatments. Since there is not a lot of livestock within city limits; why do we see so many veterinary clinics and surgeries dotted around the metropolis?
Could it be because there are, currently, 10 zoos listed within the State of Illinois? These include the justly famous Chicago Zoological Park in the suburb of Brookfield; or, the Lincoln Park Zoo which was founded in 1868 and is one of the oldest zoos in the country. However, I cannot imagine a zookeeper walking a lion into one of the city’s many veterinarian clinics and calmly sitting in reception awaiting his turn to see one of the Vets Of Chicago!
Domestic Pets
Considering that, by 2013, there was more than four times the number of pets in the USA than there were children and, given that the population of this region is in the 10 million range; it is a fair bet that many of these pets would be located there and hence a big demand for the services of veterinarians. Unverified statistics put the number of pet cats in the US close to 90 million with dogs coming second at just over 80 million (strangely, the number of households owning a dog is higher than those for cats). Fish come next; small mammals, like rabbits, hamsters or gerbils are in fourth place followed by birds, reptiles and amphibians. Even if they only accepted cats and dogs as their patients, all the good vets in the metropolitan area should be kept busy most of the time.
Which Veterinarian To Take Your Pet To?
While some of them will make house calls, it is more usual for you to have to take your pet to the veterinarian clinic – whether for routine preventative medicine or emergency treatment. This poses two problems; if all the occupants of your home have to be at work or in educational establishments most of the daytime; who is going to transport the pet to the clinic? Additionally, many pets find the trip to the clinic somewhat traumatic and might put up some resistance to the idea.
Ideally, you need a clinic that is close by and operates beyond the normal work and study hours. If you are within easy reach of the loop; the Vets In Chicago working at the Metropolitan Veterinary Center are available from 7am to 10pm, seven days a week for the convenience of both you and your pet.
