Canine vaccinations keep your dog healthy by preventing potentially serious diseases such as rabies, distemper and hepatitis. As some canine diseases can transmit to humans, vaccinations also keep the members of your family healthy as well. Over the years vaccinations have become more customizable for individual animals, when you put your trust in a Chicago pet clinic you may find the veterinarian suggests vaccinations that are tailored for your dog. No two dogs are alike, even though the breed has guidelines and as such the schedule for vaccinations should be set to the characteristics of the dog in question. The factors that are taken intoaccount include:

   *   The dog’s health

   *   Breed and age

   *   Environment and lifestyle, and

   *   Travel

Vaccination basics:

A Chicago pet clinic administers two types of vaccinations. The first are thought of as “core vaccines” and include all those that are deemed essential which are rabies, parvovirus and distemper. Other vaccines available are considered “non-core,” which are dependent more on the environment and lifestyle of the dog. The only way you can determine if your dog needs to be vaccinated for Lyme disease and leptospirosis is to consult with your vet.

How often should your dog be vaccinated?

During the first year of a new puppy’s life there is a standard schedule of vaccinations that must be met to ensure perfect health. Every one or two years afterwards the dog should be given its core vaccinations.

If your dog travels considerably to compete in shows or is frequently kenneled it is a good idea to maintain non-core vaccinations as well.

Regardless of the vaccinations or the schedule, taking your dog to a Chicago pet clinic is extremely important. Annual physical exams can often show a problem that is otherwise not seen by the owner. In the event of a problem, the sooner it is caught and attended to, the better.

A Chicago pet clinic can ensure that your canine friend gets the vaccinations needed, when needed. You are invited to take your dog to the Metropolitan Veterinary Center.
